It’s the backbone of your entire day.

Before you even talk about style or flowers, there’s one decision that will shape everything: will you experience it all in one place, or spread your day across several addresses? Getting ready, ceremony, couple session, reception — together or separate?

We rarely think about it when choosing. And yet this choice shapes your timeline, your travel, your budget and, yes, your photos. Let me walk you through it, from the point of view of a photographer who lives these days from the inside.

Two ways to organize your day

Almost every wedding I cover falls into one of two big families.

Everything in one place

More and more couples choose a single venue: an estate, an inn or a hall that offers rooms to get ready, a space for the ceremony, a garden for the couple session, and the reception hall — all on the same grounds.

You arrive the night before or in the morning, and you don’t leave again. Everything happens on site.

Across several locations

The other great classic: each of you gets ready on your own side, often at home or at a hotel. You meet at the church or the ceremony site. Then everyone moves on to the reception hall, sometimes several kilometres away.

Three addresses, sometimes four. A day that keeps moving, from morning to night.

Neither one is “the right one.” They simply tell the story of different kinds of days.

The real hidden factor: travel time

Here’s what couples underestimate the most: every move costs time. Far more than you’d think.

A twenty-minute trip on the map is rarely twenty minutes in real life. You have to gather people, load the cars, manage the stragglers, park, settle in again. A single move easily eats up an hour of your day.

With a single venue, you get that time back. Once you’re there, nobody moves, and every minute serves what truly matters: you.

With several locations, you have to build the timeline around the travel. It’s doable, and often beautiful — but it takes planning, and a little margin at every step.

A twenty-minute trip on the map is rarely twenty minutes in real life.

What each wedding venue option changes for your photos

This is where my craft comes in, because the venue partly dictates what I’m able to capture.

One place: more time for what matters

Fewer moves means more time for photos. We can take our time with the couple session at golden hour, do the group photos properly, and stay available for all those spontaneous little moments between stages.

The flip side: a single location sometimes offers less variety of settings. We make up for it by exploring every corner of the grounds — and a beautiful venue always holds more angles than you’d imagine.

Several locations: movement, scenery, rhythm

Several addresses means several moods. The intimate preparations at home, the solemnity of the church, the energy of arriving at the hall. Your photos tell a real journey through the day.

The flip side: time spent on the road is time away from the lens. If the timeline is too tight, it’s usually the couple session that pays the price. Which is exactly why you want to think about it early.

The impact on your timeline

In a single venue, the timeline breathes. You can allow yourself pauses, absorb a slight delay without a domino effect, and keep a gentle pace.

Across several locations, the timeline is more demanding. A delay in the preparations pushes back the ceremony, which pushes back the photos, which push back the meal. Everything is linked. It works beautifully — as long as you plan realistic margins between each move, never a timeline cut to the bone.

In both cases, we plan together, ahead of time. It’s the best way to live your day without watching the clock.

And what about budget?

I won’t hand you ready-made numbers — every venue has its own pricing. But here are the line items to compare, honestly, before you sign.

A single venue often bundles several services (spaces, sometimes accommodation, logistics) into one contract. That can simplify — and sometimes reduce — certain extra costs, like transporting guests between two addresses.

Several venues multiply the rentals and the logistics: ceremony, hall, possibly a shuttle for guests, a longer stretch of service time for your vendors. Nothing deal-breaking, but line items to add up clearly.

The right reflex: ask each venue what’s included, and compare the total cost of the day, not just the hall rental.

How to choose: the right questions to ask yourself

There’s no universal answer. There’s the answer that fits you. Ask yourself these questions:

Do I dream of a smooth, settled day, or of a journey through several moods?

How many guests, and will they have to travel between locations?

Do I want a religious ceremony in a specific church (which often means a second location)?

Do I need on-site accommodation for family coming from far away?

How much room do I really want to leave for the photos and the couple session?

Your answers will naturally draw out the right format.

My role as your photographer, either way

Whatever you choose, I adapt to your day — not the other way around.

When the preparations unfold in two places at the same time, working as a team of two makes full sense: while I’m on one side, my second photographer covers the other. Nothing is lost, even when the day splits in two. (The two-person team is included in my packages.)

And when everything happens in one place, we put that saved time to work for your images: more moments, more softness, more of the real thing.

Questions I’m often asked

Is it better to marry in one place? Not necessarily. It’s simpler and more restful, but a wedding across several locations offers more variety. The “better” one is the one that fits your vision.

How much time should I allow between the ceremony and the reception if they’re separate? Enough for the travel, the group photos and your couple session, without rushing. We work it out together based on the real distances.

Is an estate with accommodation worth it? For many couples, yes: less logistics, family gathered in one place, and a day that unfolds gently. Worth weighing against your guest count and your overall budget.

Your wedding venue isn’t just a backdrop — it sets the tempo of your whole day.
